Police have arrested a commercial truck driver over a fatal road crash in Mubende District that killed two people and left four children seriously injured.

Goan Kefa Mustafa was arrested on Friday (August 21) following the August 14, 2026 crash at Kagavu along the Mubende highway.

According to the Uganda Police Force, Mustafa was driving a Mercedes-Benz commercial truck, registration UBK 137F/UBK 710J, when he allegedly lost control and crossed into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

The collision claimed two adult occupants of the oncoming vehicle, who died instantly, while four children sustained serious injuries and were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment.

Traffic and Road Safety Directorate spokesperson SP Michael Kananura said Mustafa's is being held at Mubende Police Station as investigations continue.

“Police in Mubende have got Goan Kefa Mustafa, the driver of motor vehicle UBK 137F/UBK 710J Mercedes-Benz, who was involved in a fatal road crash at Kagavu, Mubende, on 14 August 2026,” Kananura said.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether speeding, careless driving or a possible mechanical fault contributed to the loss of control.

Mustafa is expected to appear in court to answer the charges preferred against him once investigations are complete.

The arrest comes amid renewed concern by traffic authorities over fatal crashes linked to speeding, reckless overtaking and night driving.

Police have recently reported several fatal crashes on major highways, with authorities attributing many of them to speeding, careless overtaking, poor visibility and driver fatigue.

During a weekly security briefing at Police headquarters last week, Kananura cited examples, including one on August 3, involving a head-on collision between a commuter taxi and a Sinotruk truck at Kamuwunga Trading Centre in Kalungu District that killed 13 people and injured four others.

The truck driver, Ibra Kiyega Mukasa, was accused of drifting into the taxi's lane at high speed. He was charged with 16 counts of causing death and injury through reckless driving.

On August 5, a speeding commuter taxi rear-ended a moving truck at Kakira along the Jinja-Iganga highway, killing three people, including the taxi driver, and injuring 10 others.

On the Masaka highway, a Global Bus collided head-on with a Sinotruk truck at Kamengo after the bus driver, Patrick Sejjuko, allegedly attempted a careless overtaking manoeuvre.

Both drivers were injured, with police indicating that Sejjuko would face charges of causing bodily injury through reckless driving after his discharge from hospital.

On August 7, a hit-and-run crash at Namulanda on Entebbe Road killed two employees of Next Media and injured another.

Police later arrested the driver who allegedly crossed into the opposite lane before fleeing the scene.

Kananura said many of the recent fatal crashes occurred at night, when reduced visibility makes it harder for motorists to identify pedestrians, vehicles and road obstructions.

He also warned about driver fatigue, particularly among motorists undertaking long journeys after working during the day.

“Fatigue is a silent killer,” Kananura said, urging drivers to stop and rest whenever they feel too tired to continue driving.

Police have advised motorists travelling at night to get adequate rest before setting off, ensure their headlights and other vehicle lights are functioning properly, reduce speed and exercise caution when overtaking.

Kananura warned that speeding and careless overtaking.
