Premier League: Holders Vipers face URA
Defending champions Vipers SC return to Uganda Premier League action on Friday against URA FC.
Due to recent continental engagements, Vipers were not able to keep pace with their Premier League timetable. As such, they have found themselves lagging - and are seven points adrift of leaders KCCA FC.
So far, all but three teams have played all their 15 first round matches. Vipers, who are second on the log, have played 13, with Friday's matchup against fifth-placed URA their 14th game.
The Kitende-based side's last game of the first round will be against Mbarara City FC, who are third on the table.

'We are losing the race' on climate change
AFP:
The world is "losing the race" against climate change, UN chief Antonio Guterres warned Thursday at the elite Davos forum, demanding bolder action from governments to arrest catastrophic warming.
"Climate change is the defining issue of our time. We are losing the race," he said on the margins of the World Economic Forum in Davos, which has featured much hand-wringing on the crisis this week.
"It is absolutely central to reverse this trend."
Following a UN summit last month in Poland, which was designed to advance the Paris climate accord, Guterres said he was "not hopeful" that nations would find the necessary resolve.
But he stressed: "We need political will and we need governments who understand that this is the most important priority of our times."

WOMEN MURDERS: Key suspect has no case to answer, freed
Ivan Katongole, the key suspect in the killing of women in Entebbe and Nansana areas of Wakiso district, has been freed after the High Court in Kampala ruled Thursday that he has no case to answer.
Justice Wilson Kwesigwa freed Katongole and two co-accused, saying there was no evidence to link them to the murders.
"The Police witnesses only proved that there was death, but they did not link the suspects to the death," he ruled, drawing huge celebrations from Katongole's supporters inside the courtroom.
In a real-life series that caught the attention of the nation, The victims, who were more than 20, were murdered in brutal - and eerily similar - fashion, their attackers first raping them, before killing them.

FGM case: 19 charged, remanded to prison in Kapchorwa
New Vision's Betty Amamukirori in Kapchorwa:
Nineteen people have been charged before the Kapchorwa chief magistrate Teko Lokeris aiding and abetting female genital mutilation (FGM) in Kween district.
They were later remanded to Kapchorwa Government Prison until February 6.
Police say most of them were participants. The mentors and cutters are still on the run.
Regional Police spokesperson Rogers Taitika confirmed that they met some resistance from locals to have the suspects released.
A source who preferred anonymity said Kween County MP Lawrance Mangusho Cherop had a bitter exchange with Police demanding that the accused, who are mainly from his village, be released immediately.
Police say they are still compiling evidence against the accused.
"This is a crime and we cannot relent to any pressures," said Taitika.
He said they are facing a lot of challenges, considering that there are many people involved in the vice - mostly done in secrecy.
Taitika said whenever they try to sensitise the people, they are told it is their culture and there is no way they can do away with it.

Shaping Africa's future: 'Avoid uni-dimension approach'
Also on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, President Museveni addressed a roundtable meeting organised by the Africa Strategy Group on the theme of shaping Africa's agenda in the global context.
He cautioned the meeting to avoid a uni-dimension approach in shaping Africa's future.
"Whereas this might have worked in the 1950s when universal emphasis was on education, helping countries like South Korea to develop and transform, many other countries did not succeed," he said.
"Today, Africa is rising partly because governments are not hostile to the private sector. We lagged behind for long because many of our governments viewed the private sector with suspicion.
"That said, the total transformation of Africa will happen when we overcome the 10 strategic bottlenecks that we have identified and which I have spoken about severally. Key among them are infrastructure development, human resource development and market integration," said Uganda's statesman.

Museveni meets MTN chief in Switzerland
Local ownership is important because it helps us stem capital flight which happens when the company is fully foreign owned. The question of repatriating 100% of your profits yet there is little value-addition and wealth creation for Ugandans is unfair. pic.twitter.com/aPlNuqla4x
— Yoweri K Museveni (@KagutaMuseveni) January 24, 2019
"It is for this reason that we are banning registration of new fully-owned foreign betting companies while the old ones will not have their licences renewed. All they do is accumulate money from Ugandans then ship it out of the country," said Museveni.

Museveni meets MTN boss in Davos
President Yoweri Museveni is in Switzerland attending the week-long World Economic Forum in the city of Davos.
There, he met the MTN Group Chief Executive Officer, Rob Shuter, and discussed with him a number of issues.
"I advised MTN Uganda to work towards floating shares on the Uganda Stock Exchange so that Ugandans can partly own the company," tweeted the President.
In my meeting with Mr Shuter, I also warned against telecoms underdeclaring calls and cheating our government of revenue. We have bought machines to track these calls but it is still important that the companies do not engage in this vice.

Dealing with immorality
"Many young people are growing up today with an exaggerated sense of entitlement, a presumption that society owes them a living and a predisposition to want to con their way to greatness. What is driving such motivation is a demonic spirit of materialism," said former Ethics Minister, James Nsaba Buturo, during plenary at Parliament.
Legislators want government to act immediately to curb what they termed as the appalling situation of moral decadence in the country.

Deadly shooting in downtown Kampala
Last evening, the sound of gunshots interrupted the 'chaotic' peace near the Old Taxi Park.
One person was killed and two others injured after a private security guard opened fire on Pioneer Building on Ben Kiwanuka Street near the Old Taxi Park in the heart of the city.
A woman, who Police later identified as Brendah Bukoye, aged 36, died on spot in an incident that set in motion a series of frenetic reaction, including a reported episode of people around swarming on the trigger-happy guard to wrestle his weapon from him.

Refugee Birthday Party
This photo taken by AFP's Dave Kaup shows teenage refugees from Uganda striking a pose during the 2019 Refugee Birthday Party at the Della Lamb Community Center, January 20, 2019 in Kansas City, Missouri.
Many of the nearly 100 excited children running around a Kansas City community center over the weekend had two things in common. They were refugees, mostly from conflict-torn regions in Africa and the Middle East. And most were there to celebrate the same thing: a January 1 birth date. Far from a strange coincidence, the date is usually assigned to immigrants who arrive in the United States without birth certificates, as refugees often do.

Oliver Mtukudzi: Afro-jazz legend dies at 66
Mtukudzi's lyrics, delivered through rasping vocals, often carried social messages about HIV/AIDS and alcohol abuse and encouraging self-respect, sometimes invoking proverbs and wisdom from his mother tongue, Shona.
He was rated by Forbes magazine one of Africa's 10 most bankable artists and some experts ranked him alongside Senegal's Salif Keita and Youssou N'Dour for his innovation and influence.
He was also famed for his philanthropy and commitment to human rights, and served as a goodwill ambassador for the UN's children's agency Unicef.
In an interview with AFP last March, Mtukudzi played down the acclaim, saying "I don't even understand the word celebrity".
Instead, he said, he set great store by the words of his mother, who declared he would never sing a note better than his first scream after his birth.
"It means when I was born I had already started singing. This is who I am."
Opposition Movement for Democratic Change lawmaker and former education minister David Coltart also paid tribute.
"If anyone ever made me proud to be #Zimbabwean, it was you. Thank you for making us happy for so long, especially during the darkest days," he tweeted.
Tuku died exactly a year after his friend, the South African jazz icon Hugh Masekela.
He performed at Masekela's memorial in Johannesburg last year.

Oliver Mtukudzi: A music legend goes to sleep
Zimbabwean musician Oliver "Tuku" Mtukudzi, a star of Afro-jazz who won a following across the continent and beyond, died on Wednesday at the age of 66, his agent told AFP.
He passed away in hospital in Harare, succumbing to diabetes complications, according to various local media.
The lanky self-taught guitarist was a legend in the vibrant cross-genre music of Afro-jazz, with 66 albums under his belt in a career that spanned 45 years.
"Today we said goodbye to a true patriot. Oliver Mtukudzi, your voice has given us comfort during difficult times, and will remain with us for posterity," said President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Twitter.
"We've lost an icon," Zimbabwean lawmaker Temba Mliswa added, also on Twitter, leading the call for him to be declared "a national hero for his national contribution to the music, arts and culture industry".
Mtukudzi's work -- dubbed "Tuku music" -- was a mixture of ethnic styles, including the Zulu-rooted mbaqanga from South Africa, and drew on diverse instruments, including Zimbabwe's mbira, a metal-tined, hand-held instrument.
