SHOOTING

KAMPALA - One person has been killed and two others injured after a private security guard opened fire in downtown Kampala Wednesday evening.

The deadly shooting happened on Pioneer Building on Ben Kiwanuka Street near the Old Taxi Park in the heart of the city.

A woman, who Police later identified as Brendah Bukoye, aged 36, died on spot in an incident that set in motion a series of frenetic reaction, including a reported episode of people around swarming on the trigger-happy guard to wrestle his weapon from him.

A large crowd of people gathered at the scene where the incident occurred, with each person talked to offering their own version of what had happened.

One person who claimed to have witnessed the shooting said the security guard, attached to privately-owned SWATT Security Ltd, pulled the trigger when some passersby refused to heed his warning to steer clear of the premises he was manning.

In a statement, Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said Central Police Station "responded to gunshots that were fired around Ben Kiwanuka Street" at 8:15pm.

He revealed that security guard Caleb Muhwezi shot dead Bukoye, who was a resident of Nsambya Railway. While earlier reports indicated that two people had been injured, the Police said one person was wounded.

Anita Nanyonjo, a student of Kampala University, was moved to Mulago Hospital and is in "critical condition".

Amid the chaotic atmosphere, during which they had to try to keep the ever-growing crowd at bay, the Police managed to arrest the guard and drive him to the Central Police Station, which is three minutes away.

Suspect Muhwezi was expected to give his statement on what exactly happened. With the killer weapon recovered, the guard has been charged with murder.
