Hwan Sung sponsors six heart patients for surgery

The money is part of the mid-year 2019 sponsorship programme approved by Kim, who is the former South Korean consular in Uganda.

Sung-Hwan Kim has donated $30, 000 (about shs111m) to facilitate six children suffering from heart disease undergo surgery at Mulago National Referral Hospital.

When he turned up to meet the beneficiaries, the jovial Kim invited parents and guardians to his office located at Ntinda Industrial area and interacted with them, wishing the children quick recovery after the surgery. He has been sponsoring heart patients every year, mainly infants for surgery since 2007.

 
Kim came along with his family, including his son, Tae Hun, wife and grandchild who were happy, to mix and greet the children and their parents, who are mainly from poor and needy families.

The beneficiaries include Shanitah Nakivumbi (7months) from Masaka, Intramu Muzamiru (7months) from Bukasa in Kampala, Kisakye (1 year) from Mubende, Michele Tingu (10 years) from Soroti Alif Masembe (5months) from Mbarara and Shafik Kato (1 year) from Mutungo in Kampala.  

 
Jason Jean Sung, the manager of Hwan Sung Charity Services said that mid-this year, the company will also sponsor more 10 children to undergo similar surgery.

He said the charity has sponsored at least 196 heart surgeries both in Uganda and South Korea, between 2007 and December 2018, which adds to a total of 202 beneficiaries.

According to Jason, the charity used to fly out heart patients to South Korea for operations until they invested in training medical workers from Mulago National Referral Hospital, who were seconded for a course at Samsung Seoul Hospital in South Korea.

"We now refer most of our beneficiaries to the Uganda Heart Institute, which reduced on the costs and enabled the medical workers to use the same skills to work on other patients," he stated.

The charity sponsors poor Ugandans suffering from heart diseases, cataract and cleft--lip to get treatment.

Kim also owns Hwan Sung Group of companies located in Ntinda Industrial Area.
