PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGNS
National Resistance Movement (NRM) presidential candidate and incumbent Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was Tuesday set to launch his quest for votes in the Bunyoro sub-region.
He would hold his last campaign rally in the Rwenzori sub-region at Katoosa Primary School playground in Kyenjojo district, before proceeding to Bunyoro.
He would then hold his first rally in Bunyoro at Buyanja Secondary School playground in Kibaale district.
Both Kyenjojo and Kibaale are NRM party strongholds and the President seeks to consolidate his gains there.
In the last general election, Kyenjojo had 215,012 registered voters, and out of these, 133,999 (62.3%) voted.
Museveni, the NRM Presidential candidate, polled 110,869 (85.8%) votes while his main rival, Robert Kyagulanyi of the National Unity Platform party garnered 15,158 (11.7%).
In Kibaale, there were 68,857 registered voters, and out of these, 43,731 (63.3%) voted.
Museveni got 35,804 (84.8%) votes in Kibaale while Kyagulanyi received 5,429 (12.9%).
Kyenjojo this time round has 242,031 registered voters, an increase of 27,010. Its polling stations also increased from 459 to 626.
The registered voters in Kibaale have also increased by 19,289. They were 88,146 in 2021.
The polling stations also rose from 156 to 220.
Kibaale now has a population of 237,649 people scattered across 14 sub-counties/town councils and 312 villages, while Kyenjojo has 543,998 inhabitants living in 31 sub-counties/town councils and 892 villages.
Museveni is campaigning under the theme: “Protecting the Gains, Making a Qualitative Leap into High Middle-Income Status.”
The theme focuses on safeguarding achievements over the past 39 years, such as peace and development, while aiming to propel Uganda to high middle-income status.
Other gains include wealth creation initiatives, job opportunities, service delivery, market access, as well as East African political federation.
