National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu on Wednesday (December 24) thanked residents of Kalangala district for what he described as a warm and enthusiastic reception during his campaign visit to the islands.
Kyagulanyi expressed appreciation to island communities for turning up in large numbers despite the logistical challenges associated with island life, saying the turnout demonstrated a shared desire for change. He was speaking at Bukasa in Kyamuswa as he continued his presidential campaign.
“I have come for part two. They prevented me from coming to speak to you in 2021, but I am back,” Kyagulanyi said.

He told supporters that despite previous setbacks, he remained committed to the struggle.
“I am here to tell you that I did not surrender. The reason I came back is so you can know that I have never given up,” he added.
During the event, the district Woman Member of Parliament, Helen Nakimuli, briefed the NUP leader on key challenges facing island communities, including poor transport services, limited access to healthcare, youth unemployment and difficulties affecting fishing communities.
"They have treated the lake as if it is their own. They even allow illegal nets and then blame it on the fishermen. The lake is our mother and father," she said.
Kyagulanyi pledged that a NUP-led government would prioritise improved water transport, healthcare and education in hard-to-reach areas. He also said the Fisheries Protection Unit under the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces would be removed from the lake if he is elected president.

He urged residents to remain peaceful and vigilant as the country heads towards the 2026 general elections, calling on supporters to convert the large crowds at rallies into votes on polling day.
Kyagulanyi further warned residents against individuals he said were falsely presenting themselves as his representatives.
"They are being used by Museveni. They come with money and claim it is I who sent them," he cautioned.
Kyagulanyi is expected to break off for Christmas on Thursday before resuming his campaign activities in Buvuma on Friday.
