Crowds brave heavy rain for Museveni’s rally in Kassanda

The rain started at about 8:40am and lasted for four hours, but did not deter enthusiastic NRM supporters, who queued quietly from the early hours at the walk-through metal detectors and luggage scanners to enter the campaign venue.

Crowds of people braved heavy rain on today (December 17, 2025) for President Yoweri Museveni’s campaign rally at Bukuya town council grounds in Kassanda district.

Museveni, who is campaigning for his seventh elected term in office on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party ticket, had at the time of publishing this story arrived for his first rally of the day.

The rain started at about 8:40am and lasted for four hours, but did not deter enthusiastic NRM supporters, who queued quietly from the early hours at the walk-through metal detectors and luggage scanners to enter the campaign venue.

However, many motorists were seen navigating the murram roads leading to the venue that became slippery, costing them time.

Kassanda started operating as a district on July 1, 2018, after being carved out of Mubende, one of the oldest districts in Uganda, having been established around 1905 by colonial rulers.

The major economic activities in Kassanda include gold mining and farming, especially coffee growing and cattle rearing.

After addressing the Kassanda rally, Museveni will head to the neighbouring Mityana district for his second and final campaign event of the day at Saaza grounds.

Kassanda has a population of 314,008 people scattered across 15 sub-counties and 569 villages.

In the last general election of 2021, it had 134,798 registered voters, and out of these, 86,864 (64.44%) voted.

Museveni polled 37,265 (44.7%) votes in this district while his main rival, Robert Kyagulanyi of the National Unity Platform party, garnered 44,990 (53.9%).

Kassanda now has 155,256 registered voters, an increase of 20,458. The polling stations also increased to 380, up from 300 in 2021.

In Mityana, 407,386 inhabitants are living in 17 sub-counties and in 613 villages.

In the last general election, Mityana had 176,029 registered voters, and out of these, 116,133 (65.97%) voted.

Museveni polled 38,163 (33.9%) votes while Kyagulanyi got 72,955 (64.8%). Mityana now has 214,754 registered voters, an increase of 38,725. The polling stations are 487, up from 337 in 2021.

Both Kassanda and Mityana are among the many districts that NUP captured in the central region, NRM’s traditional stronghold, in the 2021 general election.
