The hunt for the national team for the 9th Woodball World Cup in Shaoxing China is on at Kyambogo University today.
Fourteen players, seven from each gender are needed to join Joyce Nalubega and Thomas Khedi who qualified to the team by virtue of being last year’s most valuable players.
There is no back door entry to the team and Uganda Woodball Federation (UWBF) selected 32 players to battle it out in the three different national trials starting today and each trial will have competitors face off in three rounds totalling 36 fairways.
“We selected the 32 best players of the season, but they shall tussle it out in three national team trials playing 36 fairways in each trial for us to select the best 14 players, “UWbF acting technical director William Osire explained.
Osire noted that the focus is for Uganda to better the 2018 performance where they finished second in the 8th edition of the World Cup in Thailand.
The other two trials will be held on July 7 and July 14 at Makerere University Business School or Makerere University depending on the availability of the venue.
And thereafter the final team will be named on July 21 during the President’s Cup tournament.
The 32 players including, Moses Agaba, Darry Gilles Amanyire, Brian Gwaka, Abednego Okello, Edson Tumwine, Robert Mutiibwa, Jackson Masiga, Trevor Oming, Onesmus Atamba, and Samson Rugongeza will battle it out for the seven slots in the men’s team.
On the women's team players including, Linda Acio, Babirye Nalwoga, Sanyu Mirembe, Sandra Nabagala, Lillian Zawedde, Rashida Natese, Christine Birungi, Dorah Nabale, Florence and Joan Mukoova will face off in the battle to make it to the final squad.
