National Council of Sports (NCS) General Secretary Dr. Patrick Bernard Ogwel has called on Uganda’s national woodball team to remain disciplined and focused as they embark on their quest for glory at the 4th World Cup Beach Woodball Championship in Thailand.
Speaking on Friday, September 5, 2025, during the official flag-off ceremony, Dr. Ogwel praised the strides made by the Uganda Woodball Federation, noting that their achievements stand out even among federations with over a century of history.
“I’m impressed with what woodball has accomplished. Many federations have existed for over 100 years but have never won a World Cup medal or even reached the global stage,” he said. “I urge you to stay disciplined in your careers and remain focused. There are incentives for those who succeed internationally. Remember, you’re not just representing the federation—you’re representing Uganda.”
Team Uganda begins its campaign this morning at Laem Charoen Beach, where the World Cup will run from September 8–12, alongside the inaugural Thailand Open International Beach Woodball Championship, which concludes on September 13.
Leading the charge is Thomas Khedi, Uganda’s most decorated woodball player and team captain. A multiple-time Most Valuable Player with a history of international success, Khedi is aiming for gold in what promises to be a fiercely competitive four-day tournament.
“We’ve had thorough preparations. The team is composed, disciplined, and confident. I see no reason why we shouldn’t bring results home,” said Khedi.
Coach Onesimus Atamba echoed his captain’s optimism, highlighting the team’s blend of youth and experience. “I’m impressed with the strokes they’re hitting in practice. We’re ready, and I expect good results,” he said.
The men’s team features Darry Gilles Amanyire, Akram Matovu, George Guma, and Khedi, while the women’s side includes Christine Birungi, Rhonah Namutebi, Anita Nakyazze, and Jackline Naula. Uganda will compete in the Fairway team event, Stroke team event, and Stroke singles, but will not participate in the doubles category.
Uganda enters the tournament with a strong track record. At the 2023 Beach Woodball World Cup in Malaysia, the team won four medals and finished fourth overall. In 2017, they placed third in Indonesia, and in 2019, they claimed silver. Financial constraints forced them to withdraw from the 2024 edition, but this year, they return with renewed ambition and national pride.
As the team steps onto the sand in Thailand, the goal is clear: improve on past performances and bring home medals for Uganda.
