 DEATH

The head coach of Ugandan top-flight football side URA FC, Sam Timbe, has died, the club announced on Saturday.

He passed away while being moved to Nakasero Hospital in the capital Kampala, the club said in a post on its X (formerly Twitter) platform just before 4pm.

"We are saddened to inform you of the unfortunate passing of our esteemed Head Coach, Sam Timbe, this afternoon while en route to Nakasero Hospital for ICU, as referred by St Catherine Hospital. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time."

URA added that Timbe's death has come at a time when the team is camped at Standard Hotel in Kampala, preparing for the upcoming FUFA Super 8 cup semi-final match against fellow league side KCCA FC.

That match is scheduled for Sunday (August 20) at the MTN Omondi Stadium.

The club said "further updates will be provided in due course".

Timbe was appointed the head coach of URA in September 2021.

The vastly experienced Timbe won the CECAFA Kagame Cup with Ugandan sides SC Villa (2005) and Police FC (2006), and then with Rwanda’s Atraco (2009) and Tanzania’s Young Africans (2011).

He also worked in the Malaysia premier league side, Persatuan Bolasepak Sarawak and across the border here with Kenya's Sofapaka and Tusker.

Timbe was winner of national titles in Rwanda and Tanzania.
