From politicians to academicians, and economists to clergymen, the year 2023 saw the deaths of notable Ugandans.

Economist Keith Muhakanizi, Archbishop Emeritus Paul Kamuza Bakyenga, vlogger Isma Olaxess and entertainer-turned-politician Kato Lubwama were among the known people who died in 2023 in Uganda

 NOTABLE DEATHS OF 2023 

 January 10 

Former Minister of State for Public Service and former Rukungiri district Woman Member of Parliament, Prisca Sezi Mbaguta was found dead in her bed at her home in Nakasero, Kampala. During her funeral, she was hailed for fighting corruption.

 January 16 

Uganda’s High Commissioner to Kenya, Dr Wasswa Hassan Galiwango, passed on at a hospital in Kenya's capital Nairobi after suffering heart complications.


 February 3 

A sombre mood engulfed sections of the Kampala central business area as traders mourned the death of renowned trading magnate Haji Mohammed Katimbo, who breathed his last a hospital in Turkey.

 March 4 

Senior presidential advisor on media John Nagenda passed on aged 84 at Medipal Hospital in Kampala. His death was announced by Milly Babalanda, the Minister for the Presidency.

 March 7 

Justice Kenneth Kakuru, renowned for standing firm in advocating human rights, passed away at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi. His death was announced by the Judiciary. He was 65 years old.

 March 17 

Hoima district chairperson Kirungi Kadiri died in a car crash together with his bodyguard.

 April 5 

Bishop Albert Edward Baharagate succumbed to respiratory complications at Nsambya Hospital. His demise shocked many Ugandans, especially those who got the opportunity to interact with him during his lifetime.

 April 14 

Keith Muhakanizi, 64, passed on at a hospital in Milan, Italy after battling cancer-related complications for a number of years. At the time of his death, he was serving as the permanent secretary (PS) of the Office of the Prime Minister, having previously been the PS of the finance ministry.

 May 2 

Labour state minister Charles Okello Engola was shot dead by his bodyguard, Pte Wilson Sabiiti, who turned the gun on the minister at his home in Kyanja, Kampala suburb.

 May 6 

Ibrahim Tusubira aka Olaxess was shot several times in the chest and died instantly. He was driving back to his home in Kyanja, a Kampala suburb, at about 9:20pm.

 May 12 

The country woke up to the shocking news of the death of the Bible Society Uganda (BSU) general secretary, Simon Peter Mukhama at the age of 54. He felt unwell and was rushed to Mengo Hospital, where he passed on.

 May 14 

Former Ambassador of Germany to Uganda, Klaus Holderbaum, died of kidney-related complications at Mulago Hospital in Kampala. After his tour of service as ambassador, he chose Uganda over his motherland when it came to where to spend the evening of his life.

 May 17 

The former public service state minister and renowned entrepreneur, Patrick Okumu Ringa, passed on after a long illness, following a stroke he suffered about five years ago.

 May 30 

Busitema University’s physics lecturer, Dr Angela Karooro, died suddenly at the age of 38. A post-mortem examination on her body indicated that she got a sudden blood clot in the legs, which travelled to the lungs and killed her. 

 June 7 

Filmmaker, theatre actor, musician, radio host and politician Kato Lubwama died at the age of 52. He had been battling a long-standing heart condition, complications for which he succumbed, at Stana Medical Centre in Bunamwaya, Wakiso district.

 June 17 

The legal fraternity woke up to a sombre mood following the passing on of Justice of the Supreme Court, Stella Arach-Amoko at 69. Amoko died at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala.

 June 18 

President Yoweri Museveni mourned bush war comrade Col. Jack Mucunguzi, who passed on in Kampala. Mucunguzi was part of the 27 original family of the National Resistance Army/Movement liberation struggle.

 July 6 

Kampala city businessman Apollo Nyegamehe, commonly known as Aponye, perished in a motor accident in Ntungamo, on the Mbarara-Kabale highway.

 July 18 

Shock gripped the Catholic faithful following news of the death of Archbishop Emeritus Paul Kamuza Bakyenga, who breathed his last at Nsambya Hospital in Kampala.

 July 22

The country woke up to the sad news of the death of Haji Hussein Kyanjo, the former Makindye West Member of Parliament (MP). Kyanjo breathed his last at Kibuli Muslim Hospital at the age of 63, having battled colon cancer since 2011.

 August 9 

Bishop Emeritus, the Rt. Rev. Dr George William Tibesigwa of Ankole diocese, died at Mayanja Memorial Hospital in Mbarara, where he had taken a bed rest waiting for an ambulance to take him to one of the hospitals in Kampala. He was battling dementia and other ailments for close to four years. 


 August 19 

URA FC coach Sam Timbe passed on as he was being rushed to Nakasero Hospital in Kampala. Timbe was 69 years old. 


 August 21 

Architects in Uganda mourned the passing on of William Henry Ssentoogo at the age of 87. Ssentoogo died at his home in Lubowa, Entebbe Road in Kampala. 


 September 18 

The Ugandan entertainment industry woke up to the sombre news of the passing of actress and singer Evelyn Nakabira, popularly known as Evelyn Lagu. The singer-actress battled a kidney and heart-related disease.


 September 19 

Uganda Cranes legend Barnabas Mwesiga was pronounced dead at Nsambya Hospital in Kampala, where he was rushed after extreme swings in blood pressure that ultimately resulted in heart failure. 


 September 30 

Dr Aggrey Kiyingi was pronounced dead in Australia where he lived. He was 68. His wife, Mayimuna Nakayiira Galiemaya Kiyingi, broke the sad news on social media, saying her husband died peacefully in his sleep.


 October 19 

Veteran public servant and politician Henry Kyemba, breathed his last after battling diabetes for a long time.

 November 4 

The former head of Police’s Criminal Investigations Directorate, John Chris Bakiza, passed away at Mulago Hospital. Bakiza, a prominent lawyer and former lecturer at the Law Development Centre, had been in and out of hospital for the past two years.


 November 7 

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) announced the death of its second vice-president, Darius Mugoye, just two months after he closed a national tournament at its technical centre in Njeru, Buikwe district. Mugoye died at Mengo Hospital.

Former minister and member of Buganda Kingdom Lukiiko (parliament), Joyce Rovincer Mpanga, died at her home in Rubaga, a Kampala suburb. She was 90.
