The architects’ fraternity in Uganda is mourning the passing of one of their own, William Henry Ssentoogo.

“It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of one of the senior members of the fraternity Arch. William Henry Ssentoogo who has been a mentor, father, grandfather and a key figure in the architectural fraternity,” Architect Catherine Muyinda said.

Ssentoogo will be remembered for his immense contribution to the built environment

Some of his notable works include the design and supervision of State House as well as the design and supervision of Communications House.

His other contributions included the rehabilitation of the Bank of Uganda headquarters, the design and supervision of Workers House and the expansion of Christ the King Church.

Ssentoogo was the founding president of the Africa Union of Architects in 1981.

Prior to founding the Africa Union of Architects, he was the vice president of the Commonwealth Association of Architects.

Muyinda said the burial arrangements will be communicated later. “Ssentoogo will be dearly missed,” she said.

Many people who were inspired to take up the architecture course when it was launched at Makerere University have expressed their condolences to the family.

Several old boys from St Mary’s College Kisubi and St Savio Junior School Kisubi said were inspired to take up the course by the Ssentoogo when he visited the schools in the 1990s.
