Uganda started strongly as the fifth edition of the Africa Region IV Golf Championships began at the Kigali Golf Resort and Villas course on Thursday.
Uganda’s charge was led by team captain Joseph Cwinyaai, who, along with Kenyan Michael Karanga, returned two under-70 each in the opening round.
However, the two captains could not replicate their opening performance, returning 74 and 76 respectively in the second round, surrendering their lead to Seychelles’ Adrian Andrade. After playing level in the opening round, Andrade scored five-under 66 in the second to lead the individual standings by five strokes.
Andrade (138) is five and six strokes ahead of Ugandan captain Cwinyaai and Kenyan John Lejrima after the opening two rounds.
Defending champions Kenya lead the team standings (438) from their best three scorers after the second round, four strokes ahead of Uganda, in the championship that attracted six countries.
Last year, Kenya carded 864 gross over four rounds to successfully defend the trophy they had earlier won in Uganda the previous year, in Addis Ababa.
Uganda and Kenya have each won the event twice and are gunning for their third championship.
