Kenya beats Uganda to the Africa Region IV Golf Championships in Addis

Kenya carded 864 gross over four rounds to successfully defend the Africa Region IV Golf Championships in Addis Ababa on Saturday.

Like last year, Kenya again beat their archrival Uganda to the championship by 22 strokes over the four rounds, to win their second regional championship; in the fourth edition of the annual event that attracted five countries.

The champions, who headed to the final round leading by 15 strokes, produced yet another masterclass in the last round, outscoring their nearest Uganda by 7 strokes on the day.

Michael Karanga who was Kenya’s best player overall with 280gross over the four rounds, returned three-under 68, John Lejirma 70, and Elvis Muigua 72 to seal the championship emphatically.

Kenya trailed Uganda by 7 strokes after the first round but engaged top gear in the subsequent rounds to leave Uganda in their wake. They led the second round 214-225, the third 211-222, and the fourth 210-217 to win back-to-back trophies.

Uganda’s best player overall was Godfrey Nsubuga who carded 286 (70, 70, 75, 71)

over the four rounds and scoring in each, in the event where the best three scorers counted in each round. Ibrahim Bagalana returned 306 (79, 78, 75, 74); Joseph Akena 308 (73, 87, 72, 76) as Juma Abiti managed 314 (83, 77, 82, 72).

Uganda will now turn their focus on the Toyota Junior World Cup coming in two weeks in Japan where their junior team qualified.
