The Uganda national golf team will be hoping to avenge their recent loss to Kenya when the two sides clashed in the Region IV Golf Championship played at the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort a fortnight ago.

Kenya beat Uganda 3-0 points in the final played under the match-play format, to win their maiden Region IV trophy, and the two meet again in the two-nation Victoria Cup which will be played at Limuru Golf Club in Nairobi, July, 28-31.

The ten-man Ugandan team left by road for Kenya on Saturday to try and win their second Victoria Cup, having won their first in 2019 in Kampala.

Uganda had lost the previous three editions to Kenya, which put Uganda under pressure to win the tournament on home soil and they did so in style, winning by two points; 14-12.

Now they face their fierce rivals on the back of the Region IV loss but the Ugandans are hopeful of defying the odds to win their second title.

“We have tried to correct our mistakes, worked on our fitness unlike in Region IV when we were ill-prepared, so we are ready to battle them,” Godfrey Nsubuga, the assistant team captain said before the team left.

“We have trained in Entebbe for the last one week and I know we are going to perform better this time, and the good thing is we have travelled early, so we shall have enough time to train and acclimatize,” Nsubuga noted.

Team Coach Flavia Namakula said her charges were ready to compete and deliver.
“They are confident, they are strong and they are ready for the competition and we are expecting good results. They are capable, they are strong and have prepared well,” Namakula said.

She said the team only has to quickly adapt and acclimatise to the cold weather currently being experienced in Nairobi.

Six players have been added to the four that contested in the Regional IV to make ten as per the requirements of the competition.

Uganda’s team is comprised of Joseph Cwinya-ai (captain), Godfrey Nsubuga, Dennis Asaba, Andrew Ssekibejja, Ibrahim Bagalana, Tom Jjingo, Joseph Kasozi, Ronald Mugisha, Michael Alunga, and Joseph Akena.

Since its inception in 2016, Kenya has won three editions to Uganda’s one, in the two-nation tournament that is the Ryder Cup version between the two countries.
