Uganda police launches road safety campaign in schools

The campaign targeted primary school children aimed at equipping them with knowledge on how to behave while on the roads, according to a release from the Force.

The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety of the Uganda Police Force has embarked on a campaign to sensitize and raise Road Safety awareness among school-going children.

SP Kananura Mike, the Traffic spokesperson, and a team from the Police headquarters, on Thursday, April 11, camped in Luwero district where they talked and sensitized different schools. 

The campaign is running under the theme "community involvement in road safety."

The campaign targeted primary school children aimed at equipping them with knowledge on how to behave while on the roads, according to a release from the Force.

Addressing the students, SP Kananura advised Schools to avoid overloading children in their vans, have well-branded vans with reflectors, and also ensure that drivers have valid driving permits with the right classes.

Statistics from UPF indicate that 70 people died and 329 sustained injuries in one week (March 4-10 March 2024)

Among the dead were 22 motorcyclists, 23 pedestrians, and 13 passengers on motorcycles,

The major causes of these road crashes Police said were: Careless overtaking, speeding and sudden entrance from the roadside
