UCU Lady Canons head coach Nicholas Natuhereza has praised his team's impressive start to the 2026 campaign, attributing their success to the blend of experienced players and impactful newcomers.
The Lady Canons have remained unbeaten so far, recording victories over Victoria She Crocs (69–40), KIU Rangers (51–40), KCCA Leopards (51–34), Pearl Queens (57–40), and most recently Miracle Eaglets (54–36).
"The players who were here last season and the one before have raised their level. The younger players have helped, but the responsibility sits with the older group for us to remain unbeaten," Natuhereza said.
"Our focus is making it back to the finals. We want to play with aggression, communicate well, and push the ball in transition. That's how we managed to get these wins."
The team underwent significant changes ahead of the season. Bridget Aber departed for JT Jaguars, leaving Najjuko Malaika as the sole remaining player from the 2022 championship squad, alongside returnees Millicent Otieno, Divine Ezeofor, and Edith Muhawe.
To strengthen key areas, UCU brought in point guard Mariam Namukwaya from Miracle Eaglets, forward Patricia Faith Aseru from Angels, and shooting guard Doreen Nakibuka from Magic Stormers.
"These new players have been impactful. Mariam brings energy to the guards, Patricia gives us size and stability inside, and Doreen's scoring has lifted our offense," Natuhereza explained.
Key performers have driven the unbeaten run. Shillah Lamunu leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 16 points and three rebounds per game. Mariam Namukwaya contributes 13 points per game, while Faith Aseru and Doreen Nakibuuka add nearly 30 points combined in crucial wins. Sarah Namale, Martina Anyango, and Sylvia Nakituuka provide strong rebounding and defensive support.
Despite their perfect record, UCU Lady Canons currently sit second in the league table behind KCCA Leopards. KCCA has played more matches and holds a superior points difference, placing them at the top.
The Lady Canons will face defending champions JKL Lady Dolphins on Friday, March 20, at Lugogo Arena.
The team is building on a competitive 2025 campaign, where they fell in a tight semifinal series to eventual champions JKL Lady Dolphins, pushing the series to a deciding Game Five.
UCU ended last season on a high note with a 69–55 win over Magic Stormers in the third-place playoff.
