World Athletics (formerly known as the International Association of Athletics Federations, or IAAF) has officially certified Uganda’s Teryet National High Altitude Training Center.

According to the certification document, World Athletics rates Teryet highly given its high altitude and favorable training conditions for endurance athletes.

Located in the Kapchorwa district, the Teryet National High Altitude Training Centre sits at an altitude of approximately 2,200 meters above sea level, which is ideal for training athletes in endurance sports such as long-distance running.

The center also has a range of facilities for training and accommodation for athletes, including running tracks, a jogging track, an athletes’ hostel, a swimming pool, a gym, and both elementary and secondary schools to enable athletes to pursue their education as well.

By certifying the Teryet National High Altitude Training Center, World Athletics recognized the center's potential to support the development of world-class athletes and contribute to the growth of athletics in Uganda and beyond.

The certification also means that the center can host international competitions and attract athletes from around the world to train at its facilities.

Sports Minister Peter Ogwang welcomed the certification by WA and promised to further make the center more standardized.

“This is just the beginning." "There is still a lot to come in phase II of Teryet's ongoing construction,” Ogwang revealed.

It should be noted that Phase I of Teryet cost the government sh27b and its commissioning, according to Ogwang, is due this year.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni who directed the establishment of the training hub a couple of years ago is expected to grace the event once the date is fixed.

The President will be accompanied by the First Lady, Janet Kataha Museveni, and officials from the National Council of Sports (NCS), led by General Secretary Dr Bernard Ogwel, and the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), led by Dominic Otucet.

Last year, during her Teryet visit, Prime Minister Robina Nabbanja applauded the progress, stating that "athletic development in Uganda will now explode."

Both amateur and elite athletes, such as the world champions Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo and Olympic Champion Peruth Chemutai, will now look to make the most of the training center.
