Re-elected Mugisha eyes lasting legacy at USSSA

Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) president Justus Mugisha has pledged to build on the progress made in school sports after being re-elected unopposed for another four-year term.
Mugisha was returned as president for the 2026–2030 term during the 44th USSSA Elective General Assembly held at Front Page Hotel in Kampala on Saturday.
The assembly brought together 95 delegates from the association's 19 zones to review the growth of school sports, discuss key issues, and elect a new National Executive Committee.
Mugisha said the renewed confidence from delegates would motivate him and the new Executive Committee to continue expanding opportunities for learners through school sports.
"I am deeply honoured by the confidence you have once again placed in me. Together with the incoming Executive Committee, we remain committed to advancing school sports, nurturing young talent, and ensuring that USSSA continues to provide opportunities that positively impact learners across the country," Mugisha said.
During his previous term, USSSA expanded competitions, strengthened governance, and increased the association's visibility both nationally and internationally.
Mugisha highlighted the success of the association's capacity-building programme, which focused on training teachers and students as referees, umpires, coaches, and media officers.
He said the initiative had already started producing positive results, especially in officiating.
"Our aim was to train teachers and students as referees, umpires, coaches, and media officers. We organised a number of trainings across the country and the results are already visible. In netball, there were always complaints about officiating, but during this year's USSSA Ball Games II in Gulu, we used trained student officials and we registered no complaints after the competition," he said.
The USSSA president also revealed plans to establish a permanent home for the association after securing land in Ankole.
"We have been granted 80 acres of land near Nyakisharara Airfield in Ankole. We have already secured part of the funds for the lease and the land has been surveyed. We shall inform members of the next steps in the coming months," Mugisha said.
The election was conducted by the USSSA Electoral Commission chaired by Opio Joseph Ekodeu, alongside commissioners Richard Barigye and Hellen Wataba.
A total of 95 delegates and 20 outgoing Executive Committee members attended the General Assembly.
Most Executive Committee positions were filled unopposed, with elections only conducted for the positions of Third Vice President and representatives for the Northern and Western regions.
Celia Amanya was elected Third Vice President after polling 70 votes to defeat Richard Muhumuza, who secured 40 votes. Twahil Kiteezaala withdrew from the race before voting in support of Amanya.
The Northern Region will be represented by Miriam Makeba, Bithola Ocukune, and Obura Moses, while Elizabeth Tindimwebwa, Fred Kugonza, and Monday Christopher were elected to represent the Western Region.
The newly elected Executive Committee will oversee the affairs of USSSA during the 2026–2030 term.
