Rotarians have chosen the She Cranes to be the flag bearers of the Ugandan Flag at the Opening Ceremony of the District Conference-District 9213 (DISCON 2024) to be held at the Speke Resort Munyonyo.
This came about after the District 9213 chairman Robert Kiggundu visited their training ground on Friday with other Rotarians before the team left for a test series in England. The four-day conference (April 18-20) is the 99th and will be held under the theme ‘Keeping Hope Alive’.
According to Victoria Kayaga Kiggundu the District 9213 Rotary opening and welcome night chairperson, the collaboration with the team is dual-positive as they seek to rekindle hope in the communities as Rotarians.
“We are giving them a platform to recognise and expose. As Rotarians, we shall give them the required exposure to celebrate and inspire younger ones and parents to support sport,” Kayaga stated.
“In line with the theme of the conference Keeping Hope Alive, we shall be celebrating the She Cranes who have brought so much hope to the nation. She Cranes is the number-one netball team in Africa and the story of the individuals in the team is an inspiration to Rotary as we create hope in the world,” Kayaga added
“Rotary is an International Organisation delivering service to the community. In Uganda we have spearheaded many programs in various sectors including the Rotary Centenary Bank Cancer Centre in Nsambya Hospital, the blood bank at Mengo Hospital, the Rotary Peace Centre at Makerere University and many other programs in education, environment among the various communities,” she noted.
Fitness instructor Robert Ssebugwawo will head the committee of fitness and health during the conference to “showcase the role of sports participation and fitness lifestyle culture to all participants by partnering with She Cranes who are great ambassadors of sports and fitness discipline and consistency”.
The conference will help Rotarians bond while celebrating the end of another successful Rotary year with Kampala's natural splendour; just what they need to relax after a busy year.
Naivasha and Mbarara have hosted the previous two conferences. Once a year, Rotarians across the various Rotary districts in the world come together at a District Conference (DISCON) to forge ways of serving the communities.
