In a thrilling match against South Africa, the She Cranes from Uganda secured a remarkable fifth-place finish at the Netball World Cup.

Led by head coach Fred Mugerwa, the team showcased exceptional teamwork and determination throughout the tournament.

The match started with Shadia Nassanga and Mary Nuba in the goal shooting circle, Irene Eyaru in the wing attack, and Margaret Baagala in the center, giving She Cranes an early lead of 12-11 goals in the first quarter.

However, in the second quarter, the team faced a setback as they lost two crucial centre passes, resulting in a 23-23 draw.

Undeterred, Mugerwa made strategic changes in the third quarter, replacing Nassanga with Irene Eyaru in the wing attack and swapping Irene with Sarah Nakiyunga. These changes paid off, and She Cranes took a lead of 39-37 goals.

In the fourth quarter, the team displayed an unmatched winning mentality, understanding the importance of ball possession. Both teams scored 10 goals each, but the two-goal lead from the third quarter ensured She Cranes emerged victorious with a final score of 49-47.

The player of the match was awarded to Mary Cholhok Nuba, who scored an impressive 29 out of 49 goals, making her the fifth Ugandan to receive this accolade in the tournament. Nuba, playing in her first World Cup, expressed the need to build and train the team as they prepare for the 2026 Netball World Cup in Sydney, with hopes that many players will turn professional.

Head coach Fred Mugerwa praised the team's achievement, stating that they fulfilled their mission at the World Cup. He emphasized the team's unity and determination, as they were motivated to prove their critics wrong.

Star player Margaret Baagala, who had been battling sickness, played her heart out for the team's victory. Despite collapsing after the game, she received appreciation from the acting president, Brigadier General Flavia Byekwaso, for her unwavering team spirit.

Uganda's fifth-place finish marks their best performance in the tournament since their first appearance in 1979, solidifying their position among the world's top five best teams and Africa's best.
