The weather in Scotland, and the United Kingdom in general, could have a significant impact on how well Uganda performs at the Celtic Cup, which is set to begin tomorrow in Glasgow.

The She Cranes are not unfamiliar with winter conditions, but during their last visit to the United Kingdom in January, the team struggled not only with the cold but also with widespread illness that prevented several players from starting the tournament strongly.

The squad was heavily affected, with key players failing to recover in time to perform at their best. Many issues unfolded during the tour, although team manager Alice Alweny believes those lessons have now been learned.

“Once bitten, twice shy, we learned our lesson the last time we went to the UK. This time, we are doing everything in our power to stay healthy and to be ready to play,” stated team manager Alice Alweny.

As is customary, the team will receive their winter clothing upon arrival in the United Kingdom, and this year will be no different. The plan is for the players to land in Scotland, rest fully on Monday and then play a friendly match before opening their Celtic Cup campaign on Wednesday.

The United Kingdom is expected to experience freezing conditions this week. Although the team will receive winter wear from kit sponsors Gilbert, players are encouraged to carry additional personal warm clothing to ensure they stay as comfortable as possible.

Fortunately, this squad has experienced both the positive and negative effects of competing in winter conditions, and they now understand what to do and what to avoid. The team is expected to fly out on Sunday and arrive the same day.

Even so, Alweny maintains that the squad is capable of achieving a great deal and remains confident in their objective.

“The team is very ready; the only thing they are going for in Scotland is to pick a trophy. The girls look the part and will be in high spirits,” she stated.

Uganda will open their Celtic Cup campaign against Namibia.
