The Uganda Rugby Union has reignited a historic rugby link by appointing former South African international Zane Kirchner as the new Backs Coach for the Rugby Cranes.

The announcement comes as Uganda ramps up preparations for the Rugby Africa Cup, set to kick off in Kampala this July.

Kirchner joins a lineage of South African coaches who have previously guided Uganda’s national team, including John Duncan, Johann Beukes, and the late Chester Williams.

“There's a rich history between Uganda and South African coaches. When I spoke with former union management, they reminded me of how well the team did in 2007. Those conversations are motivating,” said Kirchner.

Tasked with improving Uganda's backline performance, Kirchner’s first test will be a high-stakes opener against regional rivals Kenya, especially after last year’s underwhelming championship showing.

“I’m grateful for this opportunity. I’ve been following Uganda’s rugby journey, and I see real talent here. I’m excited to work with the players and coaching staff to take things to the next level,” Kirchner added.

Kirchner brings a wealth of experience, having played fullback for the Bulls in Super Rugby and the Currie Cup. He made 64 Currie Cup appearances (64 points) and featured in 81 Super Rugby matches (105 points). He was part of the Bulls teams that won the Currie Cup (2009) and Super Rugby titles (2009, 2010).

Rugby Cranes team manager Andrew Ikopit welcomed the move, noting its potential impact:
“Bringing in someone of Zane’s caliber significantly enhances our technical setup. His high-level experience will be invaluable as we build toward a pivotal year for Ugandan rugby.”
