Rugby fans are in for an action-packed and entertaining weekend as the inaugural Kampala International Rugby 7s kicks off this Saturday at Kings Park Arena in Bweyogerere.

The two-day tournament will feature 16 teams, including eight top Ugandan sides including Stanbic Black Pirates, Hippos, Kobs, Heathens, Warriors, Walukuba, and the Uganda Select team—who will go head-to-head with international opponents such as the UK’s Shogun, South Africa All Academy, and Kenya’s Nondescripts and Strathmore University.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Dickens Akena, chairman of the local organizing committee, emphasized that the tournament aims to maintain fan enthusiasm and attract sponsor support through continuous action and entertainment.

“World rugby has mostly focused on the 15s format, but 7s rugby offers more entertainment and promotes social interaction among fans, sponsors, and organizers. This is crucial for the sport’s growth,” Akena noted.

He added that 7s rugby serves as an entry point for new players to eventually transition into 15s, and reiterated the club’s commitment to supporting the Uganda Rugby Union in developing the sport.

“With limited finances for international travel, this tournament provides valuable exposure for Ugandan players, allowing them to gain experience by competing with foreign teams. It also ensures more playing time, helping them prepare better for the upcoming season,” Akena explained.

Looking ahead, Akena revealed plans to include institutions of learning such as schools and universities in future editions of the tournament, making it a truly inclusive event that supports rugby development from the grassroots.
