Record-breaking Ngetich wins half-marathon at world road running champs

PARIS — Kenyan runner Agnes Ngetich set a new women-only world record as she won the half marathon at the world road running championships in Copenhagen on Sunday.
The Kenyan, who broke away early, crossed the line in 1 hour 05 minutes 15 seconds, 50 seconds ahead of her compatriot Veronica Loleo. Rwanda's Florence Niyonkuru finished third in 1:06:08.
Ngetich took one second off the world record for a women-only race set by her compatriot Peres Jepchirchir when winning the world half marathon title in Gdynia in 2020.
The overall women's world record is held by the Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey, who clocked 1:02:52 at the mixed-gender Valencia Half Marathon in Spain in October 2021.

Sweden's Andreas Almgren won the men's race in Copenhagen, sprinting down the final straight to shake off Nicholas Kipkorir to win in 58:06.
He was five seconds ahead of the Kenyan and 20 seconds up on Uganda's Joshua Cheptegei, who claimed the bronze medal.
