Ugandan umpire Ali Mugisha has made history by becoming the first Ugandan umpire to officiate at the Africa Netball Cup in Kenya.

Mugisha, a Level A-qualified umpire, took charge of the men's match between South Africa and Eswatini, marking a significant milestone in his officiating career and Ugandan netball.

Reflecting on the achievement, Mugisha said his appearance at the continental championship was the result of years of hard work, sacrifice and determination.

"This campaign started way back. I have always had a dream of officiating at a high level. Now that I have reached this African level, I hope I will be able to officiate at the world level as well," Mugisha said.

Mugisha's achievement adds to Uganda's growing presence at the continental championship, where the country is competing both on the court and in technical officiating.

Netball Uganda president Jocelyn Ucanda welcomed Mugisha's milestone, saying the federation remains committed to developing umpires and strengthening its technical team.

"Mugisha is determined. He knows what he wants, so I am not surprised by his achievement. We have supported him to achieve his dream, and I am glad that he has reached this level," Ucanda said.

She added that continued investment in technical development is important if Uganda is to produce more officials capable of operating at the highest levels of the sport.

For Mugisha, the achievement represents more than just officiating. It is a step towards his bigger ambition of earning opportunities on the world stage.

The Africa Netball Cup 2026 is being held in Kenya and runs until September 26, bringing together ten netball nations from across the continent.
