His record-setting performance in the Uganda Open was followed by another victory in the Entebbe Open two weeks later before he topped the men’s competition in the Kiambu Open, which was won by Kenyan female golfer Naomi Wafula in Nairobi, on November 19.

Uganda golf champion Godfrey Nsubuga wrapped his season in style when he grabbed his third win on Kenyan soil by topping the Nyali Golf Open in Mombasa on Saturday.

The 23-year old Mehta Golf Club bred golfer and currently a member of the Uganda Golf Club carded a total of 271 strokes over three rounds to overcome a strong field of top Kenyan amateur golfers that included Kenya’s number one Michael Karanga.

Nsubuga edged Karanga by a stroke to win his fifth championship in 50 days, since he won the Uganda Open on October 21. His recent win comes on the back of another major-the NCBA Bank Tanzania Golf Open at Kili Golf Club course which he won last month.

His record-setting performance in the Uganda Open was followed by another victory in the Entebbe Open two weeks later before he topped the men’s competition in the Kiambu Open, which was won by Kenyan female golfer Naomi Wafula in Nairobi, on November 19.

Nsubuga trailed Karanga by six strokes after the first round but followed it with a one-under 70 in the second, before sealing it with level-par 71 to better Karanga’s uniform 73 in wet conditions at the par-71 course.

The feat had Nsubuga picking a sh2.9m cheque on top of finishing third in the Kenya Amateur Stroke-Play Championships Order of Merit on 604 points behind second-placed Lejirma who finished with 632 points and Kiambu Golf Club’s Michael Karanga who won the series with 1213 points. It also means he will be part of the six Kenyan amateurs that will rub shoulders with the professionals during the 2024 Magical Kenya Open in March.

Overall Nsubuga played 17 tournaments in Kenya this year, winning three, finished second in five including in the Nyanza Open ‘Hippo Pot’ Golf Tournament in Kisumu, Windsor Classic in March, Transnzoia Championship in April, Goldfields Trophy Championship in Kakamega in June, and the Limuru Open in July.

He also finished third overall during the Kenya Amateur Stroke Play Championship played at Karen Golf Club in August, on top of two joint-fifth finishes in two other events.

“I’m becoming a threat to the Kenyans,” Nsubuga said, cheek in tongue.

“But they call me the Ugandan ambassador. But it was a tough on the beautiful and tough course; consistency and all time support has seen me through in what has been a memorable season,” Nsubuga stated.

“I wish the union can organize for us as many three-day World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) tournaments here so that we can also attract foreign competition.

“We are great players and the only way we can get noticed is through playing a number of tournaments. Playing in the Kenyan golf series has given me a lot of experience, and I am so grateful that the Kenya Golf Union allowed Ugandan golfers to participate in the series’’ said Nsubuga.
