Kenyan professional golfer Daniel Nduva won his first Entebbe Open Championship at Entebbe Club on Friday after defeating Ugandan Rodell Gaita in a double-sudden-death playoff.

After four rounds, both golfers finished the 72-hole competition with scores of 2-over 286, leading to a playoff on holes 10, 17, and 18 as required by the tournament rules.

The two golfers were tied after the first playoff hole. In the second, Nduva, who also won the 2019 Uganda Open at Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa, edged out Gaita with a par on the tenth hole. He became the second Kenyan to win the Entebbe Open since Jastas Madoya’s 2019 victory.

Nduva was four strokes behind round-one leader Andrew Ssekibejja after the first round, but his impressive 69 in the second round put him in the lead when the cut was made.

But a resurgent Kasango took over the proceedings after the third round after he shot 68, two strokes ahead of Nduva and one stroke ahead of Tom Jingo and Abraham Ainamani, who tied for second on 213 strokes each.

In the final round, Ainamani and Jingo struggled, shooting 74 and 81, which allowed Nduva and Gaita—who had been eighth after the third round—to compete for the championship. Nduva, who made 13 birdies over four rounds, earned the largest share of sh36m (sh5.7m). Gaita, with 13 birdies and 1 eagle, took home sh3.6m, while Ainamani received sh2.9m.

“I put up a good fight, but Nduva had better luck. It is one of those seasons when you don’t feel the game within you. But I will try to adjust in the remaining events,” Gaita said. Kasango, who made 19 birdies, finished tied for third with Ainamani. Both earned sh2.9m.

The Ugandan professionals will next compete in the West Nile Open in Arua, followed by the Kinyara Open in Masindi from November 19 to 21.

In the amateur competition played alongside the professionals’ event, Mackinon Masereka grabbed the win after returning 1-over 214 in 54 holes.

Masereka beat his brother Godfrey Kambale by four strokes to win the championship and earn sh1.9m. Joseph Cwinyaai finished third with a score of 220 and took home sh960,000/-. Kambale earned sh1.2m.
