Ali Lutwama’s composure from the penalty spot across both quarterfinal legs proved decisive as Muteesa 1 Royal University scripted a famous passage into the semifinals of the Pepsi University Football League with a tense 1-0 victory in the return leg over defending champions Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) on Tuesday at Kirumba Grounds in Masaka City.
Having already found the net from the spot in the first leg in Nkozi, Lutwama stepped up once again just moments after the restart in the return leg and delivered under immense pressure.

His coolly taken penalty separated the two sides on the day and ensured Muteesa overturned a 2-1 first-leg deficit to progress on the away goals rule after a 2-2 aggregate scoreline.
The result marks a historic breakthrough for Muteesa, who are competing in only their second season in the tournament.

After bowing out at the quarterfinal stage in their debut campaign, the Masaka-based institution has now gone a step further, reaching the semifinals for the first time.
For UMU, who are three-time champions, the defeat was a painful and controversial end to their title defence in a match that will be remembered as much for its officiating disputes as the football itself.

The return leg's defining moment arrived under contentious circumstances. Muteesa winger Patrick Busuulwa went down inside the penalty area following a challenge involving UMU goalkeeper Ashraf Kabugo, prompting centre referee Edward Ssekajugo to award a penalty.
UMU players and the coaches furiously protested, arguing that Busuulwa had committed a foul in the buildup, but their appeals fell on deaf ears.

Lutwama remained unfazed amid the chaos, calmly converting to ignite celebrations among the home supporters and tilt the tie in Muteesa’s favour.
Tensions continued to simmer throughout the encounter. UMU saw two penalty appeals of their own waved away in the second half, further fueling their frustration.

Earlier, forward Ronald Obedgiu had the ball in the net, only for his effort to be disallowed for offside in another decision that drew protests from the visitors.
Despite the tension, Muteesa held firm to secure a famous win and join Kampala University (KU) among the semifinalists.

The final whistle sparked heated scenes, with UMU players confronting the referee before security personnel intervened to escort the match officials off the pitch.
Outside the stadium, the situation escalated as rival fans clashed, leading to reported damage to university buses. Security forces were forced to fire warning shots to restore order.
Action continues on Wednesday as Ndejje University host St Lawrence University (SLAU) at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, with SLAU holding a 2-1 first-leg advantage.
