Disciplined KU hold Bugema to book UFL semifinal spot

Fully aware that a clean sheet would guarantee passage, Kampala University approached the contest with discipline and tactical caution. They focused on limiting Bugema’s attacking opportunities, a plan that paid off as goalkeeper David Wafula had a relatively quiet afternoon between the posts.

Kampala University booked their place in the semifinals of the Pepsi University Football League after holding Bugema University to a goalless draw in the quarterfinal return leg at FUFA Stadium, Kadiba in Mengo on Monday.

The stalemate was enough to send Kampala University through on the away goals rule, following a 1-1 draw in the first leg played in Bugema, Luwero district last week.

Fully aware that a clean sheet would guarantee passage, Kampala University approached the contest with discipline and tactical caution. They focused on limiting Bugema’s attacking opportunities, a plan that paid off as goalkeeper David Wafula had a relatively quiet afternoon between the posts.

The defensive trio of Joel Mulwana, Marvin Onea and Benjamin Nsubuga delivered a composed performance, effectively containing Bugema’s key attackers Patrick Nuwatuha, Owen Ssenyonga and Kenneth Bukenya. Their organisation and awareness ensured that Kampala University remained largely untroubled throughout the contest.

The first half offered little in terms of goalmouth action, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut chances. Possession was evenly shared, but neither team showed the cutting edge required to break the deadlock.

The game improved after the break as urgency increased. Bugema, needing at least one goal to overturn the tie, pushed forward in search of a breakthrough, while Kampala University remained resolute, relying on quick transitions and defensive solidity to see out the result.

Despite the improved tempo in the second half, neither side managed to find the back of the net.

At the final whistle, Kampala University advanced, thanks to their crucial away goal scored in the first leg by Gideon Nsubuga from the penalty spot.

The result marks a significant achievement for Kampala University, who return to the semifinals after falling short at the same stage last season. It also keeps alive their hopes of securing a third title, having previously lifted the trophy twice.

For Bugema, who finished third last season, the quarterfinal exit comes as a disappointment. Their failure to capitalise on home advantage in the first leg proved costly, extending their wait for a first title in the competition.

Attention now shifts to Masaka on Tuesday, where Muteesa 1 Royal University will host defending champions Uganda Martyrs University in the return leg of their quarterfinal tie.

Uganda Martyrs University carry a slender 2-1 advantage from the first leg played in Nkozi and will be aiming to defend their crown with another strong performance away from home.
