Martha Babirye and Michael Tumusiime carded an overall 1-over and level-par 71 to top the inaugural edition of the HerPower Golf Tournament at Entebbe Club on Saturday.

The event is aimed at offering a platform to women entrepreneurs to showcase their abilities in the several businesses they are engaged in as they also market their products.

The two gross players were joined by Ruth Mugisha (64nett) and Mulema Mukasa (63nett) who edged Kenyan Nelson Mutai on count-back in the ladies organized event that attracted 175 players.

“Today was about making sure that even as we tee off it was about making sure that the work we do as we tee-off is creating change, breaking barriers and making sure that we are creating a future where women businesses will thrive,” MTN CEO Sylivia Mulinge stated during the awards ceremony.

“Today was more than just the 18 holes we played but it was also about creating a platform where business networks could be formed and also for us to be able to create opportunities for women entrepreneurs to be able to showcase.

“This is a reflection that at MTN we are looking to create a space where we want to advance women entrepreneurs, build a full eco-system that enables them to be able to grow as we continue to support them. We had not given women a big enough platform for them to be able to create a change that we know women are capable of when they are given opportunity to thrive,” she stated.

Ssetimba who is just two years in the game and plays off handicap 31 could also not hide his joy after his podium finish.

“I’m enjoying I prepare well and on a good day it has paid off,” he said.

“I had a good game, the day was good without rain. I played my normal game and got 48 points on the front nine. I had one par on the front and three on the back for a total of 8-under 63.

“About the tournament, it is good to empower women because they are our mothers, our wives and when they engage in business they are supposed to get a lot of support from the men. So, a golf tournament played at this magnitude we can only wish it gets better with each year,” Mulema stated.
