Kenyan lady golfer Mercy Nyachama shot a second round of 3-over 74 to take a two-stroke lead in the 15th edition of the MTN Entebbe Ladies Open Championship at Entebbe Club on Friday.

Nyachama notched two birdies on the par 5s, holes 1 and 18, to set herself on course to win her first event in Entebbe.

The 2025 Uganda Ladies Open champion, Nyachama, is ahead of two-time winner Peace Kabasweka (2022 and 2024) and Tanzanian Neema Olomi, who are tied for second, going into the last round of the 54-hole World Amateur Golf Ranking event.

Olomi is gunning for his second victory at the Entebbe course, having won the 2018 Uganda Ladies Golf Open championship on the same course in 2018.

After her opening birdie, Nyachama’s putting let her down on holes 3, 4, 6, and 7, which she bogeyed before a run of eight consecutive pars before she again stumbled on the par-4 17 with another bogey.

“I putted twice and thrice on many holes; otherwise it would have been better,” Nyachama said. On her part, Kabasweka failed to capitalize on all five par 5s, picking up two bogeys on No. 1 and 7 in addition to three more on holes 2, 9, and 17.

“My driving improved, but I wasn’t consistent with my approach shots, and that caused my bogies.”

Lurking in the shadows is Olomi, whose second-round score was three strokes better than that of 2023 winner Martha Babirye, who scored 8-over 79 in the second round, to displace her in the leaderboard. Olomi carded a 76, which moved her to joint second and into contention. The overall winner will walk away with sh2.4m, with the second, third, and fourth taking home sh1.6m, sh1.2m, and sh1m, respectively.
