Mixed results for Uganda after Day 3 at Commonwealth Games

Uganda’s quest for excellence at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games continued on Sunday with action in the pool, the ring, basketball 3x3 and weightlifting.

Swimmer Tara Naluwooza opened Sunday’s action by competing in the women’s 100m freestyle heats, where she posted 1:02.71 to finish eighth in heat four, won by Sri Lanka’s Yalindi Minagi Rupesinghe in 1:00.31.

In heat seven of the same event, Gloria Muzito qualified for the semi-finals after posting 55.88, 62 microseconds short of her national record. The best eight swimmers from the two heats advanced to the final.

In the men’s 50m breaststroke, Tendo Mukalazi finished third in heat four after posting 29.77, 36 microseconds short of his national record. In the same heat, Jordan Ssamula clocked 30.42.

Mauritius’ Hans Li Ying Pin won the heat in 28.89, but none of the eight swimmers from the heat advanced to the semi-finals.

England’s Adam Ramsay-Peaty led all qualifiers with a time of 27.27 from heat six, which produced the highest number of semi-finalists with seven swimmers advancing.

In the 3x3 basketball, Uganda’s girls maintained their 100% winning streak with a 21-8 victory over Fiji after earlier wins against Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and Kenya.

Jane Asinde, Melissa Akullu and Jamila Nansikombo scored seven points each, while also contributing six, five and three rebounds respectively, to secure victory for Uganda.

Bulou Tuisue led Fiji’s scoring charts with five points and two rebounds in the losing effort.

However, the Ugandan girls were outplayed by Australia in their final classification match, losing 21-9 to finish second in Group A and qualify for the quarterfinals.

In the men’s 60kg weightlifting competition, Uganda’s Davis Niyoyita finished fifth in the snatch with a 105kg lift but registered a DNF (Did Not Finish) overall.

Malaysia’s Bin Kasdan Mohamad won gold with a Games record of 273kg, made up of 121kg in the snatch and 152kg in the clean and jerk.

India’s Rishikanta Singh Chanambam (264kg) and Kenya’s Joshua Amunga Mboya (260kg) claimed silver and bronze respectively.

In boxing, Nuhu Batte defeated India’s Aditya Pratap Yadav 3-2 to qualify for the quarterfinals.

In netball, the She Cranes maintained their winning run with an 80-36 victory over Trinidad and Tobago, making it two wins from two matches.
