She Cranes survive Welsh scare for first Commonwealth Games win

Uganda’s national women’s netball team, the She Cranes, pulled off a great escape as they defeated the Welsh Feathers 59-50 to secure their first victory at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Coach Rashid Mubiru selected an interesting starting line-up, with Mutesi Nassimu preferred at wing defence, Joan Ryekoboth at centre, while Gloria Aya and Shaffie Nalwanja started at goal defence and goalkeeper respectively.
Alice Isoto made her debut as the She Cranes’ starting goal shooter and was immaculate as Uganda edged the first quarter 15-13. In the second quarter, the coach made a host of changes, introducing centre Margaret Baagala, Mary Nuba and Hanniisha Muhameed.

The changes initially disrupted the team’s rhythm, and Uganda trailed 31-28 before recovering strongly in the third quarter to overturn the deficit and take a 45-39 lead.
The She Cranes completed the job in the fourth quarter, sealing a comfortable 59-50 victory.
Team captain Racheal Nanyonga was pleased with the victory but admitted there was still room for improvement ahead of the remaining matches.
“We did what the coach wanted us to do. It wasn’t easy on our side, but we won it at the end of the match,” stated Nanyonga.
The victory puts the She Cranes in a good position, but they will need to raise their level against tougher opposition in their remaining matches.
