Mengo Hospital beat Nsambya Hospital 1-0 courtesy of Dr. Stuart Ssekisaka’s strike to help them win the overall title as the fourth edition of the Medical League ended at Mengo SS ground on Sunday.
Ssekisaka’s second half header ensured the victory for Mengo who edged their fiercest rivals to the number one spot in football by two points. The highly contested match was a do-or-die encounter and a decider for both sides that kept fans of either side on tenterhooks throughout the match that also determined who took the overall trophy.
Mengo also produced the Most Valuable Player and the best goalkeeper in Blick Benjamin and Jonathan Isingoma in the annual event which is a sports platform for all medical institutions in Uganda where they come together and have some physical exercises through disciplines like football, netball and volleyball as they interact and get to know each other and as they physically and mentally improve their wellbeing.
On their part Nsambya produced the top scores from football and netball; Herbert Muyomba and Betty Namaganda as well as the netball MVP Betty Nakabugo. This was on top of winning the overall trophies for netball and volleyball where Kampala Hospital and Mengo Hospital as well as Kisubi Hospital and the Uganda National Health Laboratory and Diagnostic Services (UNHLS) were first and second runners-up respectively.

“We are very happy and very proud to have won this league today. We thank our fans, the management of the hospital and all our players for their resilience patience and hardwork they have exhibited; were over delighted and we thank God for this,”
“The league has been very competitive because Nsambya led from the start but we have beaten them in the decider,” Dr. Blick Benjamin who works in the department of surgery and the team captain-football said.
The chairman of the league Twaha Ssekabira said 700 people had benefited from the free medical camp that was organized besides the sports gala.
“The league has ended well and I would like to thank all the hospitals that have provided free medical services. All-in-all it was a good outing and we would like to thank our partners Vision Group, Kaps Impex, Mega Life Services, Uganda Cancer Institute, Mega Life Sciences, Boots Pharmaceuticals, Kem Labs, Uzima Water, YOTV and MedX who have supported us in a unique way.”
“It has been a successful league and we want next years to surpass even this one,” Ssekabira stated.
