Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital (KRRH) amassed 36 points from six outings to win the fifth edition of the Medical League football title.

Despite losing 2-0 to the Uganda Cancer Institute in one of their two matches on the final day of the league at St. Lawrence University Ground on Sunday, KRRH secured a 3-0 victory against Ecopharm in their last game, edging out the National Drug Authority by a single point to claim the title.

“We have worked hard for this trophy from the start; our directors and administrators have supported us in every outing, enabling us to achieve this,” said Specioza Bukirwa, the team manager and captain.

“Our players were very committed, training after work and exhibiting teamwork to ensure victory. Our team maintained top form since the first outing despite losing a few matches,” she added.

Striker Ssempala Muzaata expressed his elation, noting that the team worked hard with the help of God to win on their first attempt.

Bethany Women and Family Hospital was named the most promising team, while Ecopharm Pharmacy was recognized as the most consistent team in the league, which has been played since March. Makerere University – Johns Hopkins University (MU-JHU) was acknowledged as the best timekeepers, while Orthopedics, Kibuli Hospital, and Platinum Hospital received awards for the most professional and most organized teams.

The chairman of the Medical League, Ssekabira, stated that the league was successful despite venue challenges.

“We started with 20 teams, but only 17 completed the season. We had games in three disciplines, and the best received individual and team awards,” he said.

“We hope the league will grow bigger. We are in talks with several sponsors to join New Vision and Uzima Water. We urge all medical fraternity teams that have not joined us to do so. We expect teams from UMA, Allied Health, the Ministry of Health, and other private and regional hospitals to join us.

“We aim for a better league next year. While we care for patients, we should also take time for ourselves to engage in sports, relax, and reduce stress, improving our physical and mental health. We also offer free medical services to the public at our outings,” Ssekabira added.

Dr. Ekwaro Obuku, the chief guest, urged hospitals to identify land where medical personnel can exercise near their facilities. He also called on President Museveni to fulfill his promise of providing land for a sports complex for medical professionals to relax and stay healthy while offering services.

The Medical League, sponsored by Vision Group, Uzima Water, and Kaps Impex, is a sports platform for all medical institutions in Uganda, promoting physical exercise through football, netball, and volleyball.
