The organizers of the Medical League have included athletics in this year’s competition to provide participants with more opportunities to exercise.
The Medical League Uganda is a sports platform for all medical institutions in Uganda, where they come together to engage in physical activities such as football, netball, and volleyball.
Now, short and long races and other fun games like the sack race have been added to relax the minds of the participants, according to the chairman of the league, Twaha Ssekabira.
The sixth edition of the games kicked off at St. Lawrence University Campus, Lubaga, on Sunday with a series of football and volleyball matches. Ssekabira said they will welcome four new members: Lubaga Hospital, the Uganda Physiotherapy Association, Medipal International Hospital and Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda that will join the likes of Kiruddu Hospital, National Drug Authority, Association of Physiotherapists, Mulago Orthopedics.
Ecopharm, Kampala Hospital, Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital, and the Uganda Cancer Institute, among others.
“We have started well and we hope the games will conclude successfully. We have added athletics because we want our doctors to exercise more as we fight ailments associated with a lack of physical exercise,” Ssekabira said.
“This initiative will help us maintain our health, and we encourage all employers and employees to make time for workouts. We also urge other medical institutions that have not yet joined us to get involved so we can collectively emphasize the importance of physical exercise.”
In some of the opening matches in football, the National Drug Authority (NDA) won 4-1 against Kiruddu. Arnold Masembe’s notched a brace with Esau Kizito and Deus Jjuuko scoring for NDA before Hamis Alinda’s consolation.
Robinson Lubega and Samuel Kigula also got on to the score sheet for Orthopedic, who beat UNHLS 2-1. Paul Owiny scored for the latter. In volleyball, Medipal beat Kibuli 2-1, just like Bethany, who beat Uganda Pharmaceuticals 2-0. The league is sponsored by New Vision, Uzima Water, and Kaps Impex.
