Junior Table Tennis stars put Uganda on continental map

Uganda's junior table tennis players will not only return home with an impressive medal haul from three successive continental tournaments in Ghana but also helping the Uganda Table Tennis Association (UTTA) earn continental recognition for its outstanding youth development efforts.

The Ugandan Under-19 team delivered an outstanding performance across the three tournaments held at the Borteyman Sports Centre in Accra, winning a total of eight medals, two gold, four silver, and two bronze.

The medal campaign began with the Africa Hopes Tournament, where Uganda's top seed, Joseph Sebatindira, claimed gold in the Boys' Under-15 category, while Patience Anyango secured a silver medal in the Girls' Under-15 event.

Anyango improved on that performance at the African Youth Championships, producing a brilliant run to the Girls' Under-15 title. She defeated Tunisia's Saidi Ela 3-2 in a thrilling final to win Uganda's second gold medal of the championships.

Uganda also impressed in the team events, with the girls' team winning a silver medal after losing 3-0 to Egypt in the final.

In the Under-19 girls' singles, Jemimah Nakawala earned a bronze medal after narrowly losing 3-2 to South Africa's Sondan Rochica in the semifinals. Her teammate, Nangonzi, exited in the quarterfinals following a 4-2 defeat to Algeria's Morice Tania.

Uganda collected another bronze medal in the Under-19 girls' doubles through the pair of Nakawala and Nangonzi. The duo fought bravely before falling 3-2 to Egypt's Abdelsalam Darin and Thabet Farida in the semifinals, concluding an impressive doubles campaign.

In the boys' singles, Joseph Sebatindira reached the quarterfinals in both age categories. He lost 3-2 to Egypt's Gaber Yasin in the Under-19 competition before suffering another quarterfinal defeat to Israel Aklie in the Under-15 event.

Uganda's boys' team comprised Joseph Sebatindira, Joshua Magaya, and Enock Balyewunya.

The continental campaign concluded with the Africa Cup, where the Ugandan youngsters maintained their impressive form. Sebatindira and Anyango each won silver medals after finishing runners-up in their respective finals.

Sebatindira lost 3-0 to Egypt's Samer Asser, while Anyango was defeated 3-0 by Tunisia's Saidi Ela. The victory was sweet revenge for Ela, who had earlier lost 3-2 to Anyango in the African Youth Championships final.

Uganda's successful campaign was capped by individual and institutional recognition.

Africa's Under-15 girls' champion, Patience Anyango, was named the Most Improved Player. The award was presented by Wahid Enitan Oshodi, President of the African Table Tennis Federation (ATTF) and Executive Vice President of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).

The ITTF also honored the Uganda Table Tennis Association with a special Award of Appreciation in recognition of its exceptional commitment to youth development and dedication to nurturing the next generation of African table tennis talent.

National coach Alvin Katumba proudly received the award on behalf of UTTA, bringing a fitting conclusion to Uganda's memorable campaign in Accra.
