At the glamorous event, Byaruhanga and forward Fauzia Najjemba were crowned as the male and female player of year respectively.

Byaruhanga who was part of the Uganda Hippos that finished runners-up in the AFCON U20 finals, guided Vipers to the Uganda Cup and also made his senior debut with the Cranes during the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers beat teammate Abdul Aziizi Kayondo and Express forward Eric Kambale to the award.

The 20-year-old who called his mum to the stage after being announced was full of emotions.

“I lost my father when I was young and school fees became a challenge. It is at this moment that I want to thank Mr. Justus Mugisha who got me from Kisoro and offered me a scholarship at Standard High School, Zzana,” stated a teary Byaruhanga.

However, Najjemba who had tremendous performances with both the senior team (Crested Cranes) and U20 in various competitions including scoring more than 11 goals, won the female accolade ahead of Lady Doves duo Fazila Ikwaput and Daisy Nakaziro.

“First of all, I want to thank the Almighty Allah for this moment. I’m happy but at the same time nervous. This award means a lot to me. I want to thank my family and parents for giving me the chance to play football. I thank FUFA for giving girls the opportunity to showcase our talents, “noted Najjemba.

Najjemba who was spotted through Airtel Rising Stars feels this allowed her to show her talent.

“I’m a proud product of the Airtel Rising Stars and I take this opportunity to thank the Airtel brand for always supporting football. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to play right from a young age,” she said.

The awards organised under the theme of celebrating Uganda’s finest football personalities saw Byaruhanga and Najjemba each walk away with a brand new car plus a cash prize of sh1m each.

In other categories, Express and Lady Doves coaches Wasswa Bbosa and Fred Musiime respectively were named the best men and women football coaches of the year, while St Lawrence’s Emmanuel Wasswa was the best beach soccer player of the year.

The awards are also aimed at honouring excellence for Ugandan footballers annually in a bid to raise the level of competition.
