Rebecca Cheptegei finished 14th to lead Uganda's encouraging display in the women's marathon at the World Athletics Championships today, with Mercyline Chelangant and Doreen Chesang placing 18th and 21st respectively.

Considering 78 athletes started the race, the performance of Uganda's trio deserves commendation.

Moreover the conditions were punishing, with as many as 13 runners failing to complete the race - the heat and humidity taking its toll.

Uganda's chances of adding to Joshua Cheptegei's gold have gone to the last day and four different disciplines, in which six athletes will compete for medals.

The marathon trio of Victor Kiplangat, Stephen Kissa and Andrew Kwemoi,  men's 5000m talent Oscar Chelimo, women's 800m star Halima Nakaayi and reigning women's 3000m SC Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai will all be in the hunt.
