National team player Joseph Cwinya-ai carded level-par 71 to win the 25th edition of the Kinyara Golf Open Championship in Masindi on Saturday.
Playing off handicap -7 the Tooro Club bred golfer beat his nearest rival Abudhala Kakooza to the championship by two strokes, to successfully defend his title as he matched to his fourth consecutive win from the annual tournament.
Cwinya-ai notched six birdies on holes 2, 3, 6, 7, 9 and 18 en-route to his fourth championship win this year in addition to his earlier victories in the Mayombo Open, Tooro Tusker Open and the Venus opens at his home club.
“The tournament was good as it has always been; great hospitality from Kinyara Golf Club members. The conditions on the course were not bad despite the rains that showered before. We were lucky it did not rain on us on any of the days,” Cwinya-ai said.
“I dedicate this win to my boss and my sponsor Ernest Rukundo and to my late Dad Keuber Samson,”
Godfrey Asindua (64nett), Philip Okanya (65) and Henry Byaruhanga (67) were to three players with the best net scores in the men’s Group A while Enock Mukiibi (64), Jimmy Mwesige (64) and Faisal Mulindwa (66) were the best from Group B.
Group C that had 16 competitors was topped by Stephen Oribi (62nett) with Alex Chono (66) and Stephen Ochieng completing the podium with 70nett. Acen Ongol (69nett), Angel Kaya (74) and Prossy Zawedde (76) were the top ladies in the three-day championship that attracted over 100 players.
The best seniors included Collins Mukuru, C.D Langoya and Grace Obua who returned 74, 80 and 85nett respectively.
The annual event was sponsored by Kinyara Sugar, Liaison Group, ICEA Lion, Sanlam, UAP Old Mutual, MUA, KCB Bank and Gold Star Insurance.
