As the USSSA-Teso zonal championship approaches, Amus College School is determined to defend its title and secure qualification for the USSSA Nationals in May at Ngora High School.
The championship will run from April 10 to 14, 2025, at Bishop Maraka College and Wiggins SS in Kumi District, featuring 80 schools competing in boys' and girls' categories.
Calvin Opio, Amus College's games teacher, remains confident despite recent setbacks at the USSSA-Bukedea district qualifiers where both their boys' and girls' teams lost to Bukedea Comprehensive School in penalty shootouts. "While the district qualifiers didn't go our way, we're now fully focused on defending our Teso zone titles," Opio told Vision Sports. "Both teams are training hard with the ultimate goal of reaching the nationals."
The Kachumbala County-based school, which successfully defended its zonal title last year in Ngora, faces stiff competition from rivals including Teso College Aloet, TEPA, Ngora High School, and Serere SS - all district champions preparing intensely for the tournament.
Bukedea Comprehensive School's managing director, Professor Jonas Gumisiriza, believes his school's momentum from the district victories will carry them through the zonal competition. "We'll apply the same energy and strategy that won us the district titles," Gumisiriza stated. "Our team is strong enough to win both the Teso zonal and national championships this year."
Gumisiriza acknowledged the tough competition ahead but remained confident: "We respect our opponents, especially Amus College, but our clear target is to lift both titles at the zonal level." The stage is set for an intense battle as schools vie for supremacy in one of Uganda's most competitive school sports tournaments.
