It was a dark Saturday on September 5, as people gathered at Joseph Malagwe’s home to celebrate his victory, when a tragedy unfolded in the backyard. It was 1:00am. Under the cover of disco ecstasy and wild jubilations, Jane Namugambe, who had reportedly gone to ease herself in the nearby banana plantation, announced the bad news. Gerald Masagazi, the village defence secretary, was found dead. He was 54. “I have seen a lifeless body of a man lying in a pool of blood, inside Raymond Nsereko’s banana plantation,” Namugambe shouted.
