Elia Alitia, the outgoing vice president of the Democratic Party (DP) for northern Uganda, has taken a bold step by declaring his candidacy for the party presidency against incumbent president general Norbert Mao in the upcoming internal party elections.

Mao is also the current Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.

Alitia was duly nominated on May 6 2025, after meeting all requirements, including payment of the sh10 million nomination fee.

Should he succeed, Alitia would become the first West Niler to vie for the presidency in the 2026 general elections against candidates from other parties, including President Yoweri Museveni of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Alitia says he hopes to be a voice for the voiceless.

He will compete with other aspirants, including Bayigga Lulume, MP for Buikwe South Constituency, and Eng. Richard Sebamala, MP for Bukoto Central.

The polls are scheduled to take place in the western city of Mbarara from 28 to 30 May 2025.
