FDC President Patrick Amuriat has downplayed the significance of his two legislators, Anthony Akol of Kilak County and Emmanuel Ongiretho of Jonam, attending the NRM caucus.

He explained that the party had suspected the two MPs of distancing themselves for years, citing their absence from key party events, including the national delegates conference.

“We got to know that they were actually on their way out of FDC because they did not submit to the FDC whip, so what happened last week is just a confirmation of what we expected,” Amuriat said in a Monday interview with New Vision.

While the two have not publicly declared a move to the ruling party, Amuriat suggested that they have no future within FDC, as their positions in their constituencies remain uncertain. He speculated that the MPs are exploring new opportunities to retain their seats.

“Their absence will not shake FDC. When MPs like Abudu Katutu, Elijah Okupa, Anglina Osege, and others left, we remained strong,” Amuriat added.

In response to the FDC MPs’ presence at the NRM caucus, NRM National Vice-Chairperson Eastern, Capt. Mike Mukula, hinted that more FDC MPs are expected to join the ruling party.

“We are still in talks with many and we shall unveil them at the appropriate time. My brother Amuriat should know that FDC is in its evening time,” Mukula said.

He also predicted that FDC may struggle to field a presidential candidate in the coming elections, as more of its strongholds are expected to shift allegiance to NRM.

“Teso has been taken by the NRM, Lango is home for NRM and UPC, Acholi is also with us, and West Nile is a no-go zone for FDC. So where is my brother Amuriat going to get support?” Mukula asked.

Several FDC figures from Teso, including Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, Soroti City East MP Herbert Edumund Ariko, and former Teso Affairs Minister Agnes Akiror, have already joined NRM, with others like Alice Alaso moving to the Alliance for National Transformation.
