F
ormer Ugandan Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda and former Makerere University Business School Principal Prof. Wasswa Balunywa have been appointed to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee.

The party's director for information and publicity, Emmanuel Dombo, said the appointments were made during the NRM CEC meeting at State House, Entebbe on Friday (July 3).

The ruling party also appointed veteran politician Magode Okuya and Vurra County MP Charity Lenia to the top committee.

CEC is constituted to ensure that all organs of NRM function properly and implement the policies and decisions of the party that is led by President Yoweri Museveni as the national chairman.

It guides major political decisions and helps shape the party’s direction.

Dombo told New Vision the President is still consulting his advisors to get the fifth person to be appointed on CEC to cover all the positions.

The NRM also named three new parliamentary commissioners: Jolly Susan Abeja (Otuke district Woman MP), Faith Nakut (Napak district Woman MP) and Jesica Ababiku (Adjumani district Woman MP).

The commissioners form part of Parliament’s administrative leadership. They oversee the institution’s governance, the welfare of MPs and staff, and the implementation of parliamentary policies.

Last Wednesday, NRM had attracted 43 aspirants for only two East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) seats, setting up one of the most competitive internal party selections ahead of a CEC decision expected to determine how the final nominees will be chosen.

Tanga Odoi, the NRM electoral commission chairperson, confirmed the numbers, interpreting the high turnout as a testament to the party’s popularity and the enthusiasm of its members for regional representation.

“The Central Executive Committee will guide us on the way forward,” he said.

“Whether they pick two candidates, interact with the aspirants, or forward all the names to the caucus for election, we shall follow their guidance.”

The EALA positions are highly sought after due to the influence they offer in matters of East African integration, trade policy, and regional diplomacy.

The outcome of this internal selection will feed directly into Uganda’s broader process of electing representatives to the Arusha-based assembly.

All aspirants have been urged to exercise patience as the CEC deliberates on the selection methodology, ensuring a transparent and guided process to narrow down the field of 43 contenders to just two nominees.
