The Electoral Commission will meet with stakeholders this Friday (May 8) in Kalangala district to launch the roadmap for the district Woman MP by-election.

The seat felt vacant after the death of MP-elect Helen Nakimuli in April. She had retained the seat in January's parliamentary elections.

Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi said Friday's meeting will draw "key actors in the affairs of Kalangala district".

"The meeting begins at 8:00 am at the Kalangala district council hall grounds on the island," he said.

Mucunguzi said the EC has invited representatives of political parties, religious leaders, civil society groups, local leaders, security agencies and the district leadership.

The EC will unveil the programme, inform the participants about the guidelines and relevant electoral laws, their expectations, and the role of each stakeholder.

"We aim at ensuring a transparent process by outlining legal expectations for all participants," said Mucunguzi.

Nakimuli, who was a National Unity Platform (NUP) member, died aged 41 on April 19 following a surgical procedure in Kampala.

Survived by a teenage daughter, the legislator was four days later laid to rest at her ancestral home in Luwero district.
