MASINDI - The Bishop of Masindi Kitara Diocese, Rt. Rev. Joshua Kugonza has implored leaders in Masindi to set aside internal conflicts and instead prioritise service delivery for the betterment of their constituents.

Bishop Kugonza made this appeal on Thursday, May 21, 2026, while speaking at the swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected Masindi Municipality leaders. The event was held at Booma Ground in Masindi Town.

He emphasised that where infighting exists, effective service delivery is impossible, stressing that the community desires services, not internal disputes.

He further cautioned leaders against mixing service delivery with politics during their five-year term, warning that such actions would hinder progress for the people they serve.

During the ceremony, Betty Kyomuhendo, the former deputy mayor and councillor representing Kisiita ward, was elected as the Speaker of Masindi Municipality, securing 15 votes against her competitor, Venihas Abigaba, who received 12 votes.

In his inaugural speech, the new Mayor for Masindi Municipality, Rogers Amanyire, called upon the people of Masindi to support the current leadership to ensure effective service delivery.

He urged for unity among councillors and technocrats to diligently serve Masindi Municipality.

Paul Omoko, the Town Clerk of Masindi Municipality, also appealed for cooperation and support from the political wing.

He pledged to provide guidance and advise the council to pass implementable resolutions.

Patrick Wobusobozi noted that the people of Masindi have long yearned for good leaders and urged the new officials to serve their electorates diligently.

"As we enter office, let's ensure that we work together and serve the people of Masindi without any compromise. It's our duty to change the face of Masindi by lobbying, advocating, and partnering with different stakeholders," he stated.

Darius Nandinda, the Resident District Commissioner for Masindi, warned leaders to desist from unnecessary conflicts, emphasising that such disputes would be unproductive.

He also called upon leaders to focus on the fight against poverty, highlighting the difficulty of governing an impoverished society.

"I commend the people of Masindi for electing an exposed mayor, and I am optimistic that they will transform Masindi. I urge the people of Masindi to utilise these good leaders," he explained.

He also asked leaders to protect residents from illegal land evictions, noting that many people face threats from individuals seeking to unlawfully seize their land.

Rogers Byamukama, the Member of Parliament for Masindi Municipality, urged leaders to be focused and strategic in securing capital development projects that will enhance the municipality's appearance.

He also advised those intending to illegally occupy land to desist and seek unoccupied land instead.
