KAMPALA - The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has announced that it will hold festivities in Kampala and other districts to commemorate President Yoweri Museveni’s nomination as he seeks re-election.

Recently, the Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that Museveni, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Presidential flagbearer, will be nominated on Tuesday, September 23, 2024.

Among others to be nominated on the same day, according to the EC, is Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, the candidate of the National Unity Platform (NUP), the leading opposition party in the country.

At a press conference hosted at the Naguru-based PLU headquarters in Kampala on Friday (September 19, 2025), the PLU secretary general, David Kabanda, told reporters that they plan a mega procession of thousands of PLU supporters marching from their headquarters in Naguru to Kololo starting at 9 am on Tuesday.

NRM sources earlier in the week announced that after nomination, the President will address a grand political rally at Kololo Ceremonial Ground to officially launch his campaign manifesto for the next five years, 2026-2031.

Flanked by PLU director for mobilisation, Michael Mawanda, Kabanda, who is also the Kasambya County legislator, disclosed that their mobilisation targets the participation of 10 million people in celebrating Museveni’s nomination.

"Our supporters across the country are expected to join in the celebrations. I urge all the groups to abide by the rules set by the Independent Electoral Commission and the Uganda Police ahead of the nominations. Some of us in Kampala who have a chance of going to Kololo should come in multitudes and show our support to our candidate.

We have been directed by our chairman, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF), to mobilise thousands of their supporters to turn up for the rally at Kalolo and participate in the march.

Wherever you are, Arua, Bushenyi, Mubende, Kisoro, all supporters of the Patriotic League of Uganda should join the festivities,” Kabanda stated.

The EC has since issued stringent guidelines for the Presidential nomination exercise scheduled to take place between September 23-24, 2025, at EC permanent headquarters in Lweza-Lubowa along the Entebbe Road in Kampala.

Over 30 aspirants, according to EC have returned forms seeking to contest for Presidential elections.

According to Kabanda, NRM and PLU secretariats will jointly plan and work together in securing a massive victory for Museveni and NRM.

Recently, PLU bragged that they had won most seats in the NRM party structure and primary elections, including at the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC).

Kabanda told a press conference in the wake of the NRM party delegates conference that they had won about 65% of the CEC positions and about 75% of the local government and Parliamentary positions party endorsements during the primaries.
