The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has taken the top leadership of Makindye-Sabagabo Municipality in Wakiso District for the first time in two and a half decades.
Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of the new NRM Mayor, Bosco Galabuzi Sserunkuma, at the municipal headquarters on Wednesday, May 20, Wakiso District Chairman Eng. Ian Kyeyune described the event as a historic milestone.
He noted that of the four municipalities that comprise the district, three are led by mayors affiliated with the ruling NRM party.
"In addition to three municipal mayors subscribing to the NRM, over 90 percent of the councillors are from the same party, which is a massive achievement," Kyeyune said.
However, Kyeyune urged the new leaders to shift from political differences to governance, emphasising that residents urgently need service delivery and accountability.
"We need to work in harmony with all people, regardless of political parties they are affiliated with, to drive the entire district to greater heights. What people need most is service delivery, not a focus on political differences," he said.
The Municipal Town Clerk echoed these sentiments, stating that management looks forward to collaborative efforts to transform the municipality across all sectors.
"Although several municipal road projects are currently upgrading the network from gravel to tarmac, much more work is still needed," the Town Clerk noted.
Addressing infrastructure challenges in the municipality, Moses Otimong, the Makindye Sabagabo municipal Town Clerk, revealed that a contractor has already been secured to fix the perennially waterlogged Lufuka drainage channel that drains in Kaliddubi wetland along Busaabala road.
The channel runs along the Kampala–Entebbe Road at Namasuba Bata-Bata and drains into Lake Victoria at Kaliddubi-Busaabala.
"This drainage channel, measuring about three to four kilometers, collects stormwater from as far as Wankulukuku, Sseguku, and Najjanankumbi, passing through Ndejje and Kibiri before draining into the lake," Otimong explained.
Human encroachment has narrowed the channel over time. Consequently, heavy rains cause it to overflow into Entebbe Road, cutting it off.
"This will be a flagship project for the municipality because it directly impacts lives. Fortunately, those affected by the project boundaries have already been notified to vacate," the Town Clerk said.
In his inaugural address, the newly sworn-in Mayor, Bosco Galabuzi Sserunkuuma, pledged a transformative approach to municipal management.
"There will be less office work because we will be on the ground. People need service delivery, and that will not be compromised during my tenure," Sserunkuuma vowed.
He committed to prioritising roads and drainage infrastructure as key drivers of local development.
"I am also going to consult the former leaders to understand the past challenges they encountered so that we can find amicable solutions moving forward," Sserunkuuma said.
